An application like no other in Canada

Last year, we asked for your help to implement Quebec’s first ever Automated Tracking System, and you answered our call. This year, we ask once again, for your generosity as we expand on the existing OPAL application to create an application like no other in Canada. The possibility of a cancer diagnosis is often overwhelming for patients and their families. From the fear and stress of the prognosis, to the diagnostic process, it can be confusing and difficult to understand complicated procedures and tests. The process can take a substantial toll on patients, while they [...]

A Province-Wide Biobank Collects Samples for COVID-19 Research

On March 27, the Fonds de recherche du Québec en Santé (FRQS) and Génome Québec (GQ) launched a province-wide COVID-19 Biobank to facilitate and coordinate the collection of samples and data from COVID patients across Quebec. Dr. Simon Rousseau, a researcher at the Meakins-Christie Laboratories and Montreal Chest Institute (part of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC)), is the co-director of the Biobanque Québécoise de la COVID-19 (BQC19), which includes the medical and scientific expertise from McGill and several other Quebec institutions. Almost six months into the pandemic, there is still little knowledge of the [...]

Masks: Myths vs. Facts Setting the record straight

As of July 18th 2020, masks are mandatory in interior public spaces in Quebec, sparking a debate around the true benefits versus discomforts of wearing a mask: some people oppose it. Statements made in opposition have left many confused. Dr. Maxime Cormier, a respirologist at the Montreal Chest Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), with expertise in asthma and one of the key doctors who launched the first COVID ward at the Glen site, weighed in on the conversation and provides a bit of clarity regarding some of the myths about wearing masks. [...]

Experts from the Montreal Chest Institute Help Lead Launch of COVID Wards at MUHC Amidst Pandemic

In mid-March 2020, when the Quebec government announced confinement measures as the COVID infection and death rate tolls soared worldwide, the Montreal Chest Institute (MCI or “the Chest”) of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) rushed to launch the MUHC’s first COVID wards. This was a natural fit as COVID-19 is primarily a respiratory disease and the MCI represents the Division of Respiratory Medicine at the MUHC. Dr. Kevin Schwartzman, Director of the Respiratory Division at the MUHC and head of the Chest, was tasked to oversee the launch of the COVID wards at both [...]

It is with great pleasure that we announce Dr. Mikashmi Kohli as the recipient of the inaugural 2020-2021 Dr. Margaret Becklake Fellowship in Respiratory Research. Dr. Kohli obtained her PhD in molecular medicine from the AII India Institute of Medical Sciences. Since 2018, Dr. Kohli has been working as a postdoctoral fellow under the mentorship of Dr. Madhukar Pai. During this time, her research has focused on tuberculosis (TB) diagnostics, and she was involved in an international project to assess the availability and accessibility of diagnostics at primary health care centres in India. To date, Dr. [...]

The First Ever Lung Cancer Investigation Tracking System

Last year our call to action was well received and we were able to implement the first Lung Cancer Screening Program in Quebec. This year, we would like to, once again, call upon your generosity to help us implement the first ever Lung Cancer Investigation Tracking System. Imagine the overwhelming fear and uncertainty that a patient can experience following a lung cancer diagnosis. From initial suspicion to diagnosis and treatment, the investigation process can often take a long time, as patients go through a plethora of tests, imaging studies and invasive procedures to determine the [...]
